Phase 3: The Descent

Chikon Tokoxo
(Mazatec Mountain Guardian)

Chikon Tokoxo, the Mazatec “Owner of the Mountain”, acts as a protective guide into the deep inner terrain. Like a guardian at the mountain’s entrance, he embodies the idea of safe passage through foggy, subconscious landscapes. In Mazatec lore, sacred mountains are alive with spirit; trusting Chikon Tokoxo means trusting an ancient wisdom that watches over you. He encourages curiosity and courage as you venture downward into the quiet valleys of your psyche.
Knowledge:
Lowering your inner “mental chatter” (reducing excessive prefrontal cortex activity) allows intuitive insights from the subconscious to surface. Practices like guided imagery or meditation increase theta and alpha brain waves, which help unconscious material emerge. Visualizing a calm guide – or the strong mountain figure of Chikon Tokoxo – provides a sense of safety that lets your mind relax and explore.
Healing:
In this descent, you may encounter emotions or memories that were hidden. Treat them gently, as if exploring a real cave: with respect and care. Chikon Tokoxo’s presence assures you that even in darkness you are not alone. Each revelation is another part of you being cared for by this guardian, and as you name or feel each buried feeling, it begins to lose power over you.
Native Nation Wisdom:
Mazatec shamans honor the mountains as living, knowing beings. They often begin vision quests by climbing peaks, gazing at the view, and receiving messages. Trust that the spirit of the mountain holds wisdom for you: approach each depth with wonder. You are like an explorer guided by ancestral protection, slowly discovering new knowledge in each inner cavern.
Recommended Activities:
Safe-haven visualization: Close your eyes for 3–5 minutes and imagine a peaceful sanctuary on a mountain (a cave, a forest clearing, or a temple). Explore this safe space in your mind while breathing deeply. This mental refuge calms your nervous system and deepens body awareness.
Mindful nature walk: If possible, go for a short walk in nature (a park or hillside). Feel each part of your foot and leg supporting you and breathe evenly. This gentle movement grounds you like the mountain’s strength, reinforcing trust in your body.
Gentle yoga or stretching: Spend 5 minutes doing slow stretches or yoga poses focusing on the lower body and spine. With each stretch, feel the muscles unwind as if descending a mountain path. This releases physical tension that may mirror inner blocks.
Somatic Anchor:
Press your feet firmly into the ground. Feel the stability and weight of your body as you breathe. This connection to earth grounds you and reminds you of support as you explore inward.
Preparing for Next Cycle:
Create a mental or physical altar at the place you visualized (for example, draw or list the four elements: earth, water, air, fire). This symbolizes building a foundation after the descent. Thank the mountain spirits for their guidance and set an intention of curiosity for what comes next. This primes your mind in an open, theta-like state for the calm void ahead.
