Phase 10: The Guardian

The Four B’alam
(Mayan Jaguar Protectors)

The Four B’alam are jaguar guardians of the cardinal directions. As sacred protectors, they now watch over the boundary between your past and present self. In Maya myth, jaguars protect temples and paths at night. Here, they symbolize your newfound inner strength and vigilance. Imagine these powerful cats patrolling, loyal and fierce. They remind you of the courage you have gained – your ability to defend your well-being.
Knowledge:
This phase is about reinforcing your sense of self and setting healthy boundaries. Repeatedly practicing “no” and asserting your needs strengthens prefrontal circuits involved in decision-making. The brain’s reward systems (like dopamine pathways) light up when you honor your values. Over time, these patterns become strong neural pathways, making resilience and self-respect second nature.
Healing:
You now solidify your identity and values. Each time you set a boundary, it’s like the jaguars roaring – they keep harmful things at bay. By honoring your needs, you honor the journey you’ve taken. Feel proud of each confident “no”; these small acts build the protective watchfulness of the B’alam around you.
Native Nation Wisdom:
Jaguars are seen as guardians on sacred paths. Envision the B’alam as your spiritual allies. They teach that saying “no” to what harms you is as honorable as saying “yes” to what nourishes you. Let their fierce energy remind you that establishing boundaries is an act of strength. Your vigilance now fortifies the wholeness you have achieved.
Recommended Activities:
Practice saying “no” in small, everyday situations: for example, decline a request that conflicts with your time or values. Start with low-stakes choices (like “No, I can’t help with that right now”). Notice the confidence that grows with each refusal – this exercises your assertiveness muscles.
Carry or visualize a symbol of strength: it could be a picture of a jaguar, a meaningful object, or even an amulet. Whenever you feel uncertain, hold it or picture it and remind yourself of the jaguar’s power behind you.
Write and repeat a personal mantra of empowerment (e.g. “I am protected and strong”). Say it aloud each morning or before a challenging situation. This trains your brain to reinforce self-confidence.
Somatic Anchor:
Stand tall and role-play a scene where you set a small boundary. Feel your feet grounded and shoulders back. With each successful “no,” sense a grounding confidence growing in you – imagine it as the fur of the jaguars bristling, a foundation of strength under your skin.
Preparing for Next Cycle:
In meditation or before sleep, visualize the Four B’alam standing behind you, shielding you. Feel their power at your back, giving you security. This inner protection will carry you forward as you step into the final service phase with confidence.
